Word Families and Word Formation

Dear students!

In your blog post #4, you will have to show your understanding of the concepts of word families and word formation and their importance for building your vocabulary.

First off, you need to throroughly explore these topics in the coursebooks:

  1. English Vocabulary in Use. Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate: Units 7-10
  2. English Vocabulary in Use. Upper-Intermediate and Advanced: Units 8-10
  3. Oxford Word Skills. Intermediate: Unit 72-73
  4. Oxford Word Skills. Advanced: Units 74-75
For more information on meanings of roots and affixes, check out this ENORMOUS table full of roots, suffixes and prefixes.

For further practice of prefixes, here's a stack of Quizlet flashcards:
  1. Flashcard set 1
  2. Flashcard set 2
  3. Flashcard set 3
For further practice of suffixes and their meanings:

Flashcards with Greek and Latin roots and their meanings:

  2. Flashcard set 2

For your blog post, choose a text from your Upstream Coursebook (SB or WB) from units 5-10. In the text, find 10 words and place them in the table according to their part of speech.

Noun       Verb      Adjective      Adverb

Then, fill in the table with other parts of speech where possible. Use your dictionary where necessary.

In your blogpost, mention the name of the text and the unit number. Paste your table in your blog too.

Use 20-25 vocabulary items from your wordlist Part 3 (the words you will have to find as examples for Greek and Latin roots and prefixes) to reflect (in 100-150 words) on one of the quotations about Greek or Latin language (of your choice).

Don't forget to paste a picture with this quote in your blog post.

Good luck!
